Story:
During the Warring States period, Zhi Wa, a high official of the State of Qi, resigned from his post as the magistrate of Lingqiu and became a remonstrating official in the capital.
For several months, he did not offer any advice to King Qi. Mencius encouraged him to remonstrate.
Zhi Wa offered advice repeatedly, but it was not adopted, so he had no choice but to resign and return home.
Mencius's students asked him why this situation occurred. Mencius replied that he himself was not an official and did not rely on the government, so deciding whether to stay or leave was entirely his own choice, which was more than ample freedom.
