The Great Chinese Zodiac Story: A Legendary Race

The origin of the Chinese zodiac is a fascinating tale known as the Great Race. According to legend, the Jade Emperor, a revered deity, called for a race of all animals, declaring that the first twelve to cross the finish line would earn a place in the calendar. The clever Rat secured first place by hitching a ride on the diligent Ox and leaping off at the last moment. The order of the animals—Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig—was determined by their finishing order in this legendary race. Chinese Zodiac Story

The Jade Emperor (or the Yellow Emperor) decided to select twelve animals to be the zodiac signs, representing the years and time. To make it fair, he announced a race to determine the order, with the finish line being the gate of the Heavenly Palace. The first twelve to arrive would become the zodiac signs.

(Rat)

The Rat showed surprising cleverness in the race. It knew it was small and a poor swimmer, so it came up with a clever plan: it quietly climbed onto the diligent Ox's back. As the Ox was about to reach the finish line, the Rat jumped off its back, crossing the line just ahead of the Ox to claim first place.

(Ox)

The Ox was the most diligent animal in the race. It set off early, and with its strong body and perseverance, it steadily swam across the river with the Rat on its back. However, because it was too honest and didn't expect the Rat to jump off and get ahead, it ultimately finished second.

(Tiger)

The Tiger was brave and fast, but it encountered difficulties while crossing the river. It struggled to swim across, which took up too much time, and it ultimately finished in third place.

(Rabbit)

The Rabbit showed its wit and agility. Instead of swimming, it used its jumping ability to hop from one stone to another in the river, making its way to the opposite bank to win fourth place.

(Loong)

The Loong could have easily flown across the river, but it showed its kindness during the race. It stopped to bring rain to a drought-stricken village and also helped a Rabbit, which caused it to be delayed and finish in fifth place.

(Snake)

The Snake's experience was full of cunning. It quietly hid under the Horse's hoof. When the Horse was about to reach the finish line, it suddenly slithered out, getting ahead of the Horse to claim sixth place.

(Horse)

The Horse could have gotten a better result in the race, but due to the Snake's sudden appearance, it was startled and lost valuable time, ultimately finishing in seventh place.

(Goat)

Sheep, Monkey, and Rooster showed great teamwork during the race. They worked together to cross the river on a raft. Thanks to their combined efforts, they safely reached the other side. To honor their unity, the Jade Emperor placed them in eighth, ninth, and tenth place, respectively.

(Monkey)

Sheep, Monkey, and Rooster showed great teamwork during the race. They worked together to cross the river on a raft. Thanks to their combined efforts, they safely reached the other side. To honor their unity, the Jade Emperor placed them in eighth, ninth, and tenth place, respectively.

(Rooster)

Sheep, Monkey, and Rooster showed great teamwork during the race. They worked together to cross the river on a raft. Thanks to their combined efforts, they safely reached the other side. To honor their unity, the Jade Emperor placed them in eighth, ninth, and tenth place, respectively.

(Dog)

The Dog was a natural swimmer and should have done well. However, it got distracted and played in the water while crossing the river, which wasted valuable time and caused it to finish in eleventh.

(Pig)

The Pig was the last to finish. On the day of the race, it overslept. When it finally woke up, it was hungry and stopped to eat something. By the time it reached the finish line, the other eleven animals had already crossed, making it the final animal of the Chinese zodiac.
