During the Three Kingdoms period, Guan Yu was defeated at Maicheng and subsequently killed by Sun Quan.
Zhang Zhao suggested to Sun Quan that Guan Yu's head should be sent to Cao Cao, hoping to provoke Liu Bei into attacking Cao Cao. Sun Quan followed this advice and sent Guan Yu's head to Cao Cao.
However, Sima Yi, seeing through Sun Quan's scheme to shift the blame and trouble (嫁祸于人) onto Cao Cao, advised Cao Cao to give Guan Yu a respectful burial.
Cao Cao, recognizing Sima Yi's wisdom, arranged a grand funeral for Guan Yu with the rites befitting a high-ranking official and posthumously enfeoffed him as 'King of Jing'. This act foiled Sun Quan's plot to sow discord between Liu Bei and Cao Cao.
