During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Fan Ying was proficient in the Five Classics and the art of numerology. He lived in seclusion on the southern side of Mount Hu. Many people sought him out as a teacher, but he ignored official summons.
Emperor Shun of Han eventually invited him to the capital Luoyang with great respect. Fan Ying had no choice but to come.
Emperor Shun set up a special altar and seat for him, treating him as if he were a deity. He appointed Fan Ying as Grand Master of Ceremonies.
Unfortunately, Fan Ying did not achieve much distinction during his time in office.
