Story:
During the Western Han Dynasty, the renowned historian Sima Qian spoke up for General Li Ling after Li Ling's failed campaign against the Xiongnu and subsequent forced surrender. As a result, Sima Qian was subjected to castration and imprisoned.
Facing this immense humiliation, he had no choice but to write to his friend Ren An, pouring out his misfortunes. He wrote: 'My body is not made of wood or stone, yet I am forced to associate with jailers alone.' It was indeed utterly mistaken that his loyalty was destroyed instead.
