Story:
During the Warring States period, there was a man named Chunyu Kun in the state of Qi. He was very eloquent and skilled in speech. He often used interesting riddles to advise the monarch, making the king not only pleased but also willing to accept his counsel.
At that time, King Wei of Qi was originally a very talented monarch, but after he ascended the throne, he became engrossed in drinking and revelry, neglecting state affairs. He spent his days indulging in wine and entertainment, leaving all important matters to his ministers and remaining indifferent himself. As a result, the government became disorganized, officials were corrupt and negligent, and various feudal lords took advantage of the situation to invade, bringing the state of Qi to the brink of collapse. Although some patriotic people in Qi were deeply worried, they feared King Wei and no one dared to step forward to remonstrate.
In truth, King Wei was a very intelligent man who enjoyed using riddles to display his wisdom. Although he disliked listening to others' advice, if the advice was given skillfully, he would still accept it. Chunyu Kun, knowing this, devised a plan to find an opportunity to advise King Wei.
One day, Chunyu Kun met King Wei and said, "Your Majesty, I have a riddle for you to guess: In our country, there is a giant bird living in your palace. It has been there for three whole years, yet it neither flaps its wings to fly nor utters a sound. It just stays curled up aimlessly. Your Majesty, what kind of bird do you think this is?"
King Wei was an intelligent man and immediately understood that Chunyu Kun was satirizing him, comparing him to that big bird. As the ruler of a state, he had done nothing, only indulged in pleasure. He was not a muddle-headed monarch after all. So, after a moment of contemplation, he resolutely decided to change his ways, invigorate himself, and accomplish great things. He then told Chunyu Kun, "Hmm, this big bird, you don't know it. If it doesn't fly, it's fine; but once it flies, it will soar to the heavens. If it doesn't cry, it's fine; but once it cries, it will astonish everyone. Just you wait and see!"
From then on, King Wei no longer indulged in drinking and revelry but began to reorganize the government. First, he summoned all officials in the country, rewarding those who were diligent and responsible, and punishing those who were corrupt and incompetent. As a result, the entire nation quickly revitalized, filled with vibrant energy. On the other hand, he also began to reorganize the military, strengthening its power and establishing the nation's prestige. When the various feudal lords heard this news, they were greatly astonished. Not only did they no longer dare to invade, but they even returned the lands they had originally occupied to Qi. King Wei's actions truly "surprised everyone with one's first success"!
Therefore, later generations used the idiom "一鸣惊人" to describe someone with extraordinary talent who, when they properly utilize and display it, often achieves astonishing feats.
