During the Western Han Dynasty, the historian Sima Qian was imprisoned by Emperor Wu of Han and subjected to castration due to the Li Ling affair.
His friend Ren An wrote to him, advising him to 'be prudent in dealing with others and recommend worthy talents.' Ren An was also imprisoned and faced execution.
Sima Qian wrote him a letter, describing how he endured great suffering to survive.
At that time, Sima Qian had defended Li Ling, saying that he was brave and skilled in battle, which made the enemy too busy to save their dying or care for their wounded.
