Lu You was a famous patriotic poet during the Southern Song Dynasty. His poems expressed deep sentiments of patriotism and resistance against the Jin invaders. He was once appreciated by Emperor Xiaozong and appointed as a junior minister in charge of military equipment. However, the appeasement faction at court constantly slandered him, falsely accusing him of idly enjoying flowers and writing poetry, neglecting his duties. The emperor, swayed by these rumors, eventually dismissed Lu You. Filled with anger and frustration, Lu You returned to his hometown, Shaoxing, to live in seclusion.
One day, Lu You visited a friend in Shanxi Village. His friend and the local villagers, upon hearing of his visit, warmly welcomed him, hosting banquets in his honor. The simple and genuine hospitality deeply moved Lu You, inspiring him to write the poem 'Visiting Shanxi Village.'
Two famous lines from this poem are: '山重水复疑无路，柳暗花明又一村' (Mountains and rivers double back, seeming to block the way; then willows darken and flowers brighten, and another village appears). These lines not only depict a natural landscape but also convey the poet's hopeful outlook for the future. Later, '柳暗花明' became an idiom used to describe a sudden change in circumstances, finding a turning point in difficulties, or discovering a solution in a complex situation.
