Story:
During the Spring and Autumn period, Confucius's disciples asked him what to do if benevolence, righteousness, and life came into conflict. Confucius replied, "True noble-minded and benevolent individuals would never compromise benevolence and righteousness out of fear of death. To uphold benevolence, one can disregard their own life."
Zigong then asked how to cultivate benevolence. Confucius answered that it must start from those in leadership positions, setting an example for the common people to follow.
