Story:
During the late Eastern Han Dynasty, after Cao Cao had executed his advisor Yang Xiu, he encountered Yang Xiu's father, Yang Biao. Noticing Yang Biao looked gaunt and sorrowful, Cao Cao asked him, "Why have you become so emaciated?"
Yang Biao, deeply grieved by the loss of his son, replied, "I have the affection of a cow licking its calf (吾有舐犊之爱)." This expression vividly conveyed a parent's profound and unconditional love for their child, even in the face of immense sorrow and loss, giving rise to the idiom '舐犊情深'.
