During the reign of Emperor Wu of Han, the Xiongnu from the north once again requested a peace treaty with the Han Dynasty. Emperor Wu adopted Wang Hui's suggestion of a deceptive peace treaty, subsequently sending great generals such as Wei Qing, Li Guang, and Huo Qubing to lead armies against the Xiongnu. He also dispatched Zhang Qian on two missions to the Western Regions, thereby opening up the 'Silk Road.'
