Story:
During the Spring and Autumn period, Confucius went to persuade Dao Zhi, the younger brother of his disciple Liu Xiaji. Dao Zhi was the leader of a slave uprising, commanding 9,000 troops. Confucius hoped he would establish himself as a king in a city and stop harassing the common people.
Dao Zhi replied that in earlier times, people farmed for food and wove for clothes, without any intention to harm others. But now, he said, it is an era where the strong bully the weak, so there's no need for further persuasion.
