During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Cao Cao led a 200,000-strong army to besiege Liu Bei in Xuzhou. Liu Bei was defeated and sought refuge with Yuan Shao.
Guan Yu, along with Liu Bei's two wives, was trapped in Cao Cao's camp. Guan Yu helped Cao Cao by slaying Yuan Shao's famous generals, Yan Liang and Wen Chou.
Enraged, Yuan Shao wanted to kill Liu Bei. Liu Bei wrote a letter to Guan Yu. Guan Yu replied, vowing to serve Liu Bei with utmost loyalty and sincerity (披肝沥胆).
Subsequently, he passed through five checkpoints and slew six generals to return to Liu Bei's side.
