During the late Eastern Han Dynasty, Dong Zhuo, a warlord from Liangzhou, marched into Luoyang. He deposed Emperor Shao of Han, enthroned Emperor Xian, and appointed himself Prime Minister.
Sun Jian, the Administrator of Changsha, allied with Yuan Shu to jointly suppress Dong Zhuo. Dong Zhuo attempted to over Sun Jian by proposing to marry his daughter to Sun Jian's son, Sun Quan.
Sun Jian, indignant, told Dong Zhuo's envoy Li Jue: 'If I do not exterminate your three clans and display their heads to the four seas, I will die with unclosed eyes.'
