波澜老成 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “describes literary works or writing that are grand and magnificent in style, full of impressive undulations, and accomplished with a mature and seasoned technique”. Literally, “Grand waves, seasoned maturity”.
The book 'Huajian: Song Painting' by Tang Hou of the Yuan Dynasty records a story. During the Song Dynasty, there was a painter named Xu You.
One day, on the wall behind the Buddha hall of Taihe Temple in Changzhou, he painted a mural depicting a river, titled 'Qingji Guan He' (Clear Ji River Flowing Through the Yellow River). One particular brushstroke in this painting was 40 zhang (about 120 meters) long from beginning to end, attracting special attention from viewers.
Tang Hou commented on this, saying, "Actually, Xu You's brilliance was not just in that. Because of his profound skill and mature brushwork, his lines flowed continuously like rising and falling waves (originally '笔法既老,波澜起伏'), combining with the momentum of the water, mutually influencing each other, making it more extraordinary the more you looked at it."
Later, the idiom '波澜独老成' (grand waves, singularly seasoned) came to be used to describe poetry and prose that are grand in style and profound in skill.
