Chinese Zodiac Story

The Jade Emperor (or the Yellow Emperor) decided to select twelve animals to be the zodiac signs, representing the years and time. To make it fair, he announced a race to determine the order, with the finish line being the gate of the Heavenly Palace. The first twelve to arrive would become the zodiac signs.

鼠 · Rat

The Rat showed surprising cleverness in the race. It knew it was small and a poor swimmer, so it came up with a clever plan: it quietly climbed onto the diligent Ox's back. As the Ox was about to reach the finish line, the Rat jumped off its back, crossing the line just ahead of the Ox to claim first place.

牛 · Ox

The Ox was the most diligent animal in the race. It set off early, and with its strong body and perseverance, it steadily swam across the river with the Rat on its back. However, because it was too honest and didn't expect the Rat to jump off and get ahead, it ultimately finished second.

虎 · Tiger

The Tiger was brave and fast, but it encountered difficulties while crossing the river. It struggled to swim across, which took up too much time, and it ultimately finished in third place.

兔 · Rabbit

The Rabbit showed its wit and agility. Instead of swimming, it used its jumping ability to hop from one stone to another in the river, making its way to the opposite bank to win fourth place.

龙 · Dragon

The Loong could have easily flown across the river, but it showed its kindness during the race. It stopped to bring rain to a drought-stricken village and also helped a Rabbit, which caused it to be delayed and finish in fifth place.

蛇 · Snake

The Snake's experience was full of cunning. It quietly hid under the Horse's hoof. When the Horse was about to reach the finish line, it suddenly slithered out, getting ahead of the Horse to claim sixth place.

马 · Horse

The Horse could have gotten a better result in the race, but due to the Snake's sudden appearance, it was startled and lost valuable time, ultimately finishing in seventh place.

羊 · Goat

Sheep, Monkey, and Rooster showed great teamwork during the race. They worked together to cross the river on a raft. Thanks to their combined efforts, they safely reached the other side. To honor their unity, the Jade Emperor placed them in eighth, ninth, and tenth place, respectively.

猴 · Monkey

Sheep, Monkey, and Rooster showed great teamwork during the race. They worked together to cross the river on a raft. Thanks to their combined efforts, they safely reached the other side. To honor their unity, the Jade Emperor placed them in eighth, ninth, and tenth place, respectively.

鸡 · Rooster

Sheep, Monkey, and Rooster showed great teamwork during the race. They worked together to cross the river on a raft. Thanks to their combined efforts, they safely reached the other side. To honor their unity, the Jade Emperor placed them in eighth, ninth, and tenth place, respectively.

狗 · Dog

The Dog was a natural swimmer and should have done well. However, it got distracted and played in the water while crossing the river, which wasted valuable time and caused it to finish in eleventh.

猪 · Pig

The Pig was the last to finish. On the day of the race, it overslept. When it finally woke up, it was hungry and stopped to eat something. By the time it reached the finish line, the other eleven animals had already crossed, making it the final animal of the Chinese zodiac.

About this tool

The Chinese zodiac follows a repeating cycle of twelve animals. This calculator converts your Gregorian birth date to the Chinese lunar calendar and uses the lunar year to identify your animal sign.

A birth year alone can be misleading near the start of the year. This tool uses Lunar New Year as the year boundary, so enter the complete date rather than assuming the sign changes on January 1.

Your name personalizes the downloadable card; it does not affect the calculation. Animal stories and traditional associations are cultural references, not predictions about your personality or future.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need a full birth date?

The Chinese lunar year does not begin on January 1. A person born before Lunar New Year belongs to the preceding lunar year, so the month and day matter.

Does this calculator use Lunar New Year or Li Chun?

It uses the start of the Chinese lunar year at Lunar New Year. Some astrology systems use Li Chun (the Start of Spring) instead; those systems can give a different result near the boundary.

Does my name change my zodiac sign?

No. The date determines the animal; the name is only used to personalize the card. A nickname works too.

Do I need to sign in?

No. You can calculate your sign and generate a card without creating an account.

Where are my name and birth date processed?

The selected date is sent to the calculation API. Your name and resulting animal are sent to the image service to generate the card. The tool is not an offline or private-storage service; avoid including sensitive information in the name field.

Does the result predict personality or compatibility?

No. This is a calendar-based animal-sign calculator. Traditional stories are provided for cultural learning, not as a scientific assessment or a prediction.
