贡禹弹冠 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to express a willingness to join and assist a like-minded friend or colleague in a common endeavor, especially in public service, inspired by their success or appointment”. Literally, “Gong Yu brushes his hat”.
During the reign of Emperor Xuan of Han, Wang Ji from Langya and Gong Yu were very good friends. Gong Yu had been dismissed from office multiple times, and Wang Ji also had little success in his official career.
During the reign of Emperor Yuan of Han, Wang Ji was summoned to serve as an imperial counselor (Jianyi Dafu). Gong Yu was delighted to hear this news, so he took out his official hat, brushed off the dust, and prepared to wear it. Sure enough, not long after, Gong Yu was also appointed as an imperial counselor.
