三年化碧 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “refers to unwavering and profound loyalty or a righteous spirit that endures and manifests itself even after death, symbolizing steadfast devotion and integrity”. Literally, “Three years turn into jasper”.
During the Zhou Dynasty, Chang Hong, a high-ranking official under Duke Wen, was renowned for his unwavering loyalty to the court, his integrity, and his righteous spirit. Due to his upright character, he offended powerful figures at court and was unjustly executed by the people of Zhou.
Legend has it that at the time of his death, some admirers collected his blood and stored it in their homes. Three years later, these dried blood clots miraculously transformed into bi jade (a type of green jade), symbolizing his enduring loyalty and pure spirit.
