During the Song Dynasty, Yang Liulang dispatched Meng Liang to Wangxiangtai in the Liao Kingdom to retrieve his father's remains. Jiao Zan learned of this mission and also wished to claim credit.
Meng Liang arrived at Wangxiangtai and, under the cover of night, proceeded to steal the remains. Just as he succeeded, he encountered a shadowy figure, who was Jiao Zan. Fearing he had run into a Liao soldier, Meng Liang swung his saber and killed him.
After confirming it was Jiao Zan, Meng Liang, filled with remorse, took his own life.
