During the Three Kingdoms period, Ling Tong, a divisional commandant from the Kingdom of Wu, commanded the army that his late father, Ling Cao, once led. He befriended worthy individuals, valued righteousness over wealth, and had the demeanor of a national hero.

Once, while drinking with the governor Chen Qin and others, Chen Qin became violent and unrestrained, insulting Ling Tong while intoxicated. Ling Tong, unable to tolerate it, killed him.

Later, Ling Tong performed a great service in battle, and Sun Quan allowed him to atone for his crime through this meritorious deed.
