虎狼之国 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “an aggressive and predatory country or entity”. Characterized by its fierce and expansionist nature. Literally, “Tiger and wolf country”.
During the Warring States period, the State of Qin intended to annex the six other states. It sent Zhang Yi to persuade the State of Chu not to ally with the State of Qi.
The greedy King Huai of Chu believed Zhang Yi and, failing to receive the promised land from Qin, attacked Qin. As a result, Chu was defeated by Qin and had to compensate Qin with its own territory.
King Huai of Chu disregarded Qu Yuan's warning that 'Qin is a tiger and wolf country.' He went to Qin by himself and died there as a captive.
