桃李不言,下自成蹊 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “True virtue and sincerity naturally command respect and attract followers, without the need for boasting or self-promotion, much like how a path forms under peach and plum trees due to the goodness of their fruits, even though they don't speak”. Literally, “Peaches and plums do not speak, yet a path is naturally formed beneath them”.
In the Western Han Dynasty, there was a brave and skilled general named Li Guang. He fought against the Xiongnu more than seventy times in his life, achieving remarkable military successes and earning deep respect from his officers, soldiers, and the common people. Despite his high position and command over a vast army, and being a meritorious servant who defended the country, Li Guang never boasted about his achievements. He was not only approachable but also shared hardships with his soldiers. Whenever he received rewards from the imperial court, his first thought was always of his subordinates, and he would distribute all the rewards among his officers and men. During campaigns, if food or water supplies were insufficient, he would endure hunger and thirst just like his soldiers. In battle, he would lead from the front, fighting bravely and resolutely. With his single command, everyone would rush forward, fearlessly fighting the enemy, even willing to sacrifice their lives. What a truly revered great general he was!
Later, when the devastating news of General Li Guang's death reached the barracks, all the soldiers wept bitterly. Even many ordinary people who were not closely acquainted with the general mourned him. In people's hearts, General Li Guang was the great hero they admired. Sima Qian, the great historian of the Han Dynasty, praised him when writing his biography, saying: "Peaches and plums do not speak, yet a path is naturally formed beneath them." This meant that peaches and plums, with their fragrant flowers and sweet fruits, attract people to appreciate their blossoms and taste their fruits, even though they cannot speak, to the extent that a path is formed beneath their trees. General Li Guang, with his sincerity and noble character, earned people's reverence in the same way.
