勿忘在莒 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to always remember one's origins, past hardships, or humble beginnings”. Never forget the lessons learned from difficult times. Literally, “Do not forget being in Ju (State)”.
During the Spring and Autumn period, Duke Huan of Qi, also known as Xiaobai, once fled to the State of Ju to seek refuge due to internal strife. Later, with the help of Bao Shuya, he finally returned to Qi to govern, appointing Guan Zhong as his prime minister to assist in state affairs.
One day, when he became a bit complacent and forgot himself, Grand Master Bao Shuya reminded him: "May Your Grace never forget your exile to Ju." Duke Huan immediately realized his mistake.
