瘦羊博士 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “a person who is humble”. Practices self-restraint, and is willing to yield to others. Literally, “Thin Sheep Scholar”.
During the Jianwu reign of the Han Dynasty, Zhen Yu served as a provincial official and was later appointed as a scholar (博士, *bóshì*). Each year in the twelfth lunar month, the emperor would bestow a sheep upon the scholars. The sheep varied in size, fatness, and leanness.
At that time, the scholars argued over how to divide the sheep, suggesting to slaughter them and share the meat. They had the sheep hung up, ready for slaughter.
Zhen Yu found this disgraceful and simply chose the thinnest one for himself. Seeing this, the other scholars stopped their arguments.
From then on, Zhen Yu was known as the 'Thin Sheep Scholar'.
