鲍子知我 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to understand each other deeply and share a profound friendship”. Often implying mutual appreciation and support. Literally, “Baozi knows me”.
During the Spring and Autumn period, Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya of the State of Qi shared an exceptionally close friendship. They went into business together, and Bao Shuya always invested more capital but took less profit, happily assisting the impoverished Guan Zhong.
When Guan Zhong led an army and suffered defeat, only Bao Shuya truly understood his difficulties. After Duke Huan of Qi (小白) ascended to power, Bao Shuya willingly relinquished the position of prime minister to Guan Zhong.
Guan Zhong then famously remarked, "The one who truly understands me is Baozi."
