Jianzhen became a monk at the age of 18 and diligently studied Buddhist doctrines. In 742, Japan sent monks Eiei and Fushō to China to invite the eminent monk Jianzhen to serve as a Buddhist preceptor in Japan.
Jianzhen attempted to sail east to Japan three times, but all attempts failed, and his ship was even drifted to Hainan Island.
