发人深省 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to inspire deep thought and reflection”. To be thought-provoking and enlightening; to give one food for thought. Literally, “Elicit deep reflection and awakening”.
The Longmen Grottoes, located near Luoyang, were first constructed during the Northern Wei Dynasty under Emperor Xiaowen. Along a cliff face stretching for about one kilometer, nearly 100,000 Buddhist statues were carved.
The highest artistic achievement is found in the Fengxian Temple, which houses a 17-meter-tall Vairocana Buddha.
Du Fu wrote the poem "Touring Fengxian Temple at Longmen" poem, depicting the monastic life with morning bells and evening drums: "The heavenly gates press against the constellations, lying among the clouds, clothes grow cold. Upon wishing to awaken, I heard the morning bell, which profoundly inspires deep thought."
