扬扬自得 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to be immensely pleased with oneself”. To be complacent or self-satisfied and display it proudly. Literally, “Proudly self-satisfied”.
During the Spring and Autumn period, Yan Ying, the Prime Minister of the State of Qi, went out in his carriage. He was gentle and humble, while his coachman, whipping the horses, looked extremely pleased with himself and quite proud of his position.
The coachman's wife observed this and, upon returning home, advised her husband not to be so self-satisfied and overconfident, relying on his master's prestige.
The very next day, the coachman immediately changed his attitude. Yan Ying, seeing this, recognized him as a talented individual with potential for improvement.
