运筹帷帐 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to devise strategies and make plans from a position of control or behind the scenes; to strategically plan from the rear”. Literally, “Planning strategies within a command tent; devising plans in the curtained tent”.
During the Song Dynasty, a provincial examination in Shaoxing featured an essay titled "Gaozu Neng Yong San Jie Fu" (Emperor Gaozu Could Employ Three Heroes). One particular submission had a peculiar passage in its fourth rhyme, using the phrase "运筹帷帐" (yùn chóu wéi zhàng).
The examiners rejected this paper, arguing that the Book of Han (汉书) used "惟幄" (wéi wò) instead of "帐" (zhàng).
However, after the examination, an examiner recounted this incident to Zhou Yigong. Zhou Yigong immediately clarified, "The official was mistaken. The Records of the Grand Historian (史记) indeed uses '帷帐,' while only the Book of Han uses '幄.'"
This story highlights the importance of precise word usage and historical accuracy.
