遗簪坠屦 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to cherish old friendships and not forget old acquaintances or principles, even when presented with new opportunities or advantages; to value old connections and integrity over new gains”. Literally, “Lost hairpin, dropped shoes”.
During the Southern and Northern Dynasties, Yuwen Xiaokuan served as the Governor-General of Yanzhou. Wei Qiong went to Yanzhou to pay him a visit. When Wei Qiong was about to depart, Yuwen Xiaokuan offered to give him his horse and bridle as a gift.
Wei Qiong smiled and politely declined, saying, "In ancient times, people did not abandon 'lost hairpins and dropped shoes' (meaning old possessions or, by extension, old friends and principles), disliking to leave together but not return together. Although my conduct may not fully match that of the esteemed figures of the past, it is not my ambition to abandon the old for the new."
He firmly refused the generous gift, demonstrating his unwavering integrity and his commitment to not forsaking past connections or principles.
