三省吾身 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to engage in constant self-reflection and introspection”. To critically examine oneself multiple times. Literally, “Examine my self thrice”.
During the Spring and Autumn Period, Zeng Can, a diligent and studious disciple of Confucius, was highly esteemed by his master. His fellow students often wondered why he made such rapid progress.
Zeng Can explained, "Every day, I repeatedly reflect on three things: Have I exerted my utmost effort when doing things for others? Have I been trustworthy and honest in my interactions with friends? And have I diligently reviewed and practiced what my teacher has imparted to me? Whenever I discover any shortcomings, I promptly rectify them."
