During the Southern Dynasties, in the Song Dynasty, Lu Kai and the scholar Fan Ye shared a deep friendship and frequently exchanged letters.
One day, Lu Kai, while in Jiangnan, gathered a branch of plum blossoms. He then composed a poem: "Breaking a plum branch, I meet a courier, sending it to the one at Longtou. Jiangnan has nothing else, so I offer this branch of spring."
He sent this, along with the plum branch, to Fan Ye, who resided in Chang'an, a place often referred to as 'Longtou' in poetry due to its distant, frontier-like connotation.
Upon receiving the gift and the poem, Fan Ye was deeply moved.
