安车蒲轮 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to treat a distinguished or virtuous person with the highest courtesy and honor, symbolizing a special invitation or preferential treatment, often involving a comfortable journey or an esteemed position”. Literally, “comfortable carriage with reed-wrapped wheels”.
During the Western Han Dynasty, Emperor Wu, who held Confucianism in high regard, appointed Zhao Wan as Censor-in-Chief and Wang Zang as Palace Commandant.
These two officials then recommended their esteemed teacher, Shen Gong, to the emperor. Recognizing Shen Gong's wisdom and virtue, Emperor Wu dispatched an envoy to invite him with exceptional courtesy. The envoy was instructed to use an 'An Che Pu Lun' – a comfortable carriage with wheels wrapped in reeds to ensure a smooth and stable journey – symbolizing the emperor's profound respect and preferential treatment.
Upon Shen Gong's arrival, he was appointed as Grand Master of Remonstrance, granted the former residence of the King of Lu, and frequently consulted by the emperor on matters of state governance.
