During the late Eastern Han Dynasty, Wei Duan's sons, Yuan Jiang and Zhong Jiang, both sought out Kong Rong, one of the Seven Masters of Jian'an, due to his renowned reputation. Kong Rong was deeply impressed by them.

He wrote a letter to Wei Duan, expressing his admiration.

He praised the elder son for his profound learning and graceful bearing, deeming him capable of achieving great things.

He also commended the younger son for his genuine talent and ability to manage household affairs.

Kong Rong concluded his letter by extolling Wei Duan, likening him to "an old clam giving birth to twin pearls," referring to his two excellent sons.
