一家之言 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “a unique or original theory”. A distinctive system of thought developed by an individual or school. Literally, “The theory/views of one school/individual”.
During the Western Han Dynasty, the historian Sima Qian traveled extensively, collecting various historical materials. He spent nearly 20 years compiling "Records of the Grand Historian" (Shiji), a monumental work of over 520,000 characters.
He always maintained a rigorous attitude, documenting history based on facts and evaluating historical figures with his own unique perspectives.
He once told his friend Ren An, "My aim is to explore the relationship between heaven and man, understand the changes from ancient times to the present, and establish my own school of thought." (欲以究天人之际,通古今之变,成一家之言。)
