生子当如孙仲谋 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “If one is to have a son, he should be like Sun Zhongmou”. Used to praise an extraordinary and capable individual, especially a leader who is wise and brave. Literally, “If one bears a son, he should be like Sun Zhongmou”.
During the late Eastern Han Dynasty, Cao Cao led his army to attack Eastern Wu. Sun Quan personally led 70,000 troops to meet the challenge.
After a defeat, Cao Cao encamped on the north bank of the river and refused to fight. Sun Quan took a boat to scout the enemy's situation.
Seeing Sun Quan's army disciplined and orderly, Cao Cao sighed, 'If one is to bear a son, he should be like Sun Zhongmou. As for Liu Biao's sons, they are merely like pigs and dogs.'
After a month-long standoff, Cao Cao withdrew his troops.
