Towards the end of the Sui Dynasty, Wang Tong, a great Confucian scholar, had no desire for an official post. He decided to impart his knowledge to others, so he set up a school at He-Fen (near the Yellow River and Fen River).

His teaching methods were quite unique, attracting many people who came from far and wide to study under him.

His students included prominent figures such as Fang Xuanling, Wei Zheng, Li Jing, Cheng Yuan, Dou Wei, and Jia Qiong. People took great pride in being students of the He-Fen School.
