临机制变 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to adapt to changing circumstances”. To make flexible adjustments as the situation demands. Literally, “Adapt to the moment and make changes”.
During the Southern and Northern Dynasties, Lu Teng, son-in-law of the Prince of Donglai in Northern Wei, was serving as the Prefect of Yangcheng when Western Wei attacked and captured the city. Lu Teng surrendered and was appointed Chariot and Cavalry General by Yuwen Tai.
When Western Wei farmers Li Guangsi and Li Wu launched an uprising, Lu Teng was ordered to suppress it.
He informed Yuwen Tai that battles required adaptability to changing circumstances. As a result, he achieved a great victory and was granted the title Duke of Shangyong.
