才疏意广 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to have limited talent or ability but harbor grand ambitions”. To be aspiring beyond one's capabilities. Literally, “Shallow talent, grand aspirations”.
During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Kong Rong, the 20th generation descendant of Confucius, was highly learned and famous. However, he lacked political and military talent.
Due to his disagreements with Dong Zhuo, he was dispatched to suppress the Yellow Turban rebels, and was frequently besieged by the insurgent army. Liu Bei came to his rescue.
Later, Yuan Tan, Yuan Shao's son, led an army to attack Kong Rong and captured his wife and children. Kong Rong, who was known for having limited talent but grand ambitions (才疏意广), fled in a hurry.
