梦里蝴蝶 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “an illusion or a dreamlike state where one questions the boundary between reality and imagination; a metaphor for the ephemeral and illusory nature of existence, often referring to the philosophical dilemma of distinguishing between reality and dream”. Literally, “Butterfly in a dream”.
During the Warring States period, Zhuang Zhou, a renowned philosopher, often told allegorical stories in his book *Zhuangzi* to illustrate his philosophical views.
Among these, the fable 'Zhuangzi Dreams of a Butterfly' depicts him dreaming of becoming a butterfly, joyfully and freely flying about, completely forgetting the troubles of the human world.
Upon waking, the dream remained vividly in his mind, making him question whether he was Zhuangzi who had dreamed of being a butterfly, or a butterfly now dreaming of being Zhuangzi.
