During the Han Dynasty, Yan Ziling, Liu Xiu, and Hou Ba were very close friends.

After Liu Xiu ascended to the throne and became Emperor Guangwu, Yan Ziling harbored a strong dislike for official life. He sometimes deliberately challenged or provoked the Emperor, yet Liu Xiu continued to hold him in high esteem.

Later, when Hou Ba became the Grand Minister of Works (大司徒), he specially invited Yan Ziling to reminisce about old times. However, Yan Ziling declined the invitation by letter.

Upon hearing this, Emperor Liu Xiu remarked, 'This is just Yan Ziling's old eccentric habit!' (狂奴故态).
