Chinese flashcards FAQ

What is a Chinese picture flashcard?

A flashcard is a study prompt you use to practise recalling information. Chinese picture flashcards pair illustrations with Chinese vocabulary; on Hanzi Now, you can also show pinyin and an English meaning, then adjust those hints for your practice task.

Why choose flashcards for Chinese vocabulary practice?

Flashcards turn a vocabulary list into small prompts you can practise in any order. Choose them when you want a focused speaking or writing task, a short review session, or a simple way to return to words that need more practice.

What are the learning benefits of Chinese flashcards?

Trying to recall a word before checking it is retrieval practice, which can support longer-term retention. Flashcards also help you notice whether you need to work on a word's meaning, its tones, or its written form, so you can choose what to review next.

How can teachers use Chinese flashcards in class?

Use a few cards from the current lesson for picture-naming warm-ups, partner questions or an end-of-lesson review. Ask learners to say the word or use it in a familiar sentence, then check the complete card together.

How can parents use Chinese flashcards at home?

Choose a few words from your child's current lesson for a picture-naming game, an object hunt or a short conversation. Take turns asking and answering, and keep the complete card nearby to check the intended word.

How can I use this 温习 flashcard for self-study?

Start by checking 温习 (wēn xí), meaning “review / revise”. Look at the picture and say the word, then hide a hint or replace the Chinese text with a writing line to try recalling it before checking the complete card.

What can I customize on a Hanzi Now flashcard?

Choose Customize & download to open the editor. You can edit the Chinese and English text, choose character readings, control which hints appear, add writing lines, and adjust the border color and corner rounding while previewing the card.

Can I practise without pinyin or English?

Yes. Turn off Show for pinyin or the English meaning in the editor to hide that hint. Turn on Underline for Chinese or English to replace the answer with a writing line; the Chinese writing line also replaces its pinyin.
