楚材晋用 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “Talent from one's own region or organization is recruited and utilized by another region or organization, often implying a loss for the former and a gain for the latter”. Literally, “Chu talent used by Jin”.
During the Spring and Autumn period, Wu Ju, a high-ranking official from the State of Chu, secretly fled to the State of Jin because his father-in-law had committed a crime. In Jin, he encountered Sheng Zi, a high official from the State of Cai. Sheng Zi promised to help Wu Ju return to Chu.
Later, Sheng Zi went to Chu and discussed the issue of talent between Chu and Jin with Ling Yin Zimu. He argued that it was extremely detrimental for the State of Chu to have its talented individuals go to the State of Jin and be given important positions there.
Zimu found his reasoning sound and subsequently went to Jin to retrieve Wu Ju.
