牛鼎烹鸡 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to use great talent for a trivial task”. To underutilize a highly capable person; to be overly extravagant with resources for a minor issue. Literally, “To cook a chicken in an ox cauldron”.
During the late Eastern Han Dynasty, there was a famous man named Bian Rang in Chenliu. General He Jin invited him to serve as a clerk. Cai Yong, a court counselor, heard that Bian Rang was with He Jin and thought, "Bian Rang's talent is extraordinary; he should hold a higher official position." So he personally visited He Jin's home to persuade him to recommend Bian Rang for a more important role.
Cai Yong said, "In my opinion, Bian Rang truly possesses exceptional talent. He is intelligent, wise, perceptive, acts only according to propriety, and speaks only within the law. He is indeed a rare genius.
As the saying goes, 'If you use a large cauldron meant for cooking an ox to cook a small chicken, too much water will dilute the flavor, making it unappetizing; too little water will leave it undercooked and inedible.' This illustrates the idea of using a great tool for a small task, which is inappropriate. My current concern is that this ox-cooking cauldron is not being used to cook an ox. I hope the General will consider carefully and give Bian Rang an opportunity to fully display his abilities."
