During the Spring and Autumn period, Zi Gong, a disciple of Confucius, was originally a merchant from the State of Wei. His full name was Duanmu Ci. Being wealthy, he often wore luxurious clothing.
Confucius, disapproving of his trendy appearance, subtly remarked that 'a gentleman is not a vessel' (君子不器). Zi Gong, feeling pleased with himself, asked Confucius what kind of vessel he was.
Confucius casually replied that he was a 'hu lian' (瑚琏) vessel, referring to a precious ritual vessel. Zi Gong became even more conceited, not realizing that Confucius was implying his inner emptiness or lack of true versatile substance, suggesting he was merely a decorative object rather than a broadly capable individual.
