Curious, Wei Gu approached the old man and asked him about his business. The old man revealed that he was in charge of all marriages under heaven.

He explained that the red strings in his bag were used to invisibly tie the feet of predestined couples. He said that no matter how far apart these two people might be, they would eventually be brought together in marriage. Conversely, if the red string were to break, it would signify the separation of the couple.
