During the Warring States period, Mencius discussed the relationship between a ruler and his subjects, and the proper attitude for an upright person, with King Xuan of Qi.
Mencius said: "What is called a 'great man' is simply someone who understands principles; there is nothing peculiar about them. Their true value lies in never losing their sincere heart from childhood, remaining as pure, genuine, and fervent as a small child."
