During the Chu-Han contention, Xiang Yu, concerned about the prolonged standoff, captured Liu Bang's father. He threatened to kill Liu Bang's father and boil him into a stew if Liu Bang did not surrender.
Upon hearing this, Liu Bang retorted, 'We are sworn brothers; my father is also your father. If you do kill him and make him into a stew, please be sure to share a cup of the broth with me.'
Xiang Yu, after being advised by Xiang Bo, eventually did not carry out his threat to kill Liu Bang's father.
