甘棠遗爱 — “The lasting affection”

The idiom "Gan Tang Yi Ai" (lasting benevolence from the sweet pear tree) is deeply rooted in historical anecdotes. One prominent story is about Zichan (子产), a high-ranking official of the State of Zheng during the Spring and Autumn period. Zichan was renowned for his unwavering loyalty and profound concern for his people, consistently prioritizing their welfare.

During his administration, he implemented numerous political reforms that significantly benefited agricultural production and the general populace, earning widespread support and appreciation. Following Zichan's death, the great thinker Confucius was deeply moved and, shedding tears, remarked, "This was the lasting benevolence of ancient times!" (古之遗爱也).

The "Gan Tang" (sweet pear tree) part of the idiom harks back to an earlier story from the Western Zhou Dynasty, where Duke Shao (召公), a benevolent official, often conducted his duties and administered justice under such a tree. After his departure, the local people cherished the tree and refused to cut it down, as a symbol of their enduring gratitude for his kindness and good governance.

Both stories collectively convey the meaning of a respected figure leaving behind a cherished legacy of goodwill and affection among the people they served.
