骄兵必败 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “Arrogant troops are bound to be defeated”. Pride leads to failure. Literally, “Proud soldiers are bound to be defeated”.
During the Western Han Dynasty, Emperor Xuan of Han (Liu Xun) dispatched Zheng Ji to lead an army to attack the Xiongnu. Zheng Ji's forces also established military settlements and garrisons near Jushi.
The Xiongnu then mobilized their troops to counterattack. Emperor Xuan summoned his ministers for deliberation. Prime Minister Wei Xiang argued against sending more troops, stating that an army that relies on the size of its country and large numbers of soldiers would become arrogant, and an arrogant army is destined to be defeated.
Emperor Xuan then decided not to send more troops to attack the Xiongnu.
